Keppel hands over sludge treatment facilities in Doha North Sewage Treatment Works

Keppel Seghers Engineering Singapore Pte Ltd (Keppel Seghers), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Keppel Infrastructure Holdings Pte Ltd (Keppel Infrastructure), has handed over the solids stream and sludge treatment facilities in the Doha North Sewage Treatment Works (DNSTW) to the client, with effect from 5 July 2016.

With this handover, the 10-year operations and maintenance phase of the contract for the solids stream and sludge treatment facilities, which include the thermal drying plant, imported sludge reception and dried sludge bagging plant, has also commenced under Keppel Infrastructure Services Pte Ltd (KIS), the Infrastructure Services arm and wholly-owned subsidiary of Keppel Infrastructure.

The DNSTW is a Design-Build-Operate project awarded by Ashghal, the Public Works Authority of Qatar. As a wastewater treatment, water reuse and sludge treatment facility, it has the capacity to treat up to an average flow of 245,000m3 of wastewater per day and is the largest in Qatar. The high-grade reclaimed water from the DNSTW is transferred into Doha's irrigation network, while the processed sludge can be used as organic fertilizer or in landscaping projects.

On 10 December 2015, Keppel Seghers had achieved a substantial handover of the DNSTW to the client and, through KIS, commenced the operations and maintenance phase of the contract for its liquids stream, solids thickening and dewatering facilities for 10 years.

Dr Ong Tiong Guan, Chief Executive Officer of Keppel Infrastructure, said, "With the handover of the solids stream and sludge treatment facilities, we have reached another significant milestone for the Doha North project, which plays a crucial role in ensuring clean, liveable environments for Qatar and supports the country's sustainable economic and social development. We will continue to work closely with the client on ensuring the smooth operation of the Doha North Sewage Treatment Works."

Located northwest of Umm Salal Mohammed, the regional town of Umm Salal municipality, the DNSTW features bioreactors, granular filters, ultra-filtration, chlorine and ultra-violet disinfection on the liquids stream side; with aerobic digestion, thickening, dewatering, and subsequently, thermal drying of the resultant sludge stream. The plant also features a dual treatment odour control system, comprising chemical scrubbing and carbon polishing, to minimise impact on surrounding communities.

The DNSTW is Keppel Seghers' second landmark project in Qatar. Keppel Seghers also designed, built and handed over the Domestic Solid Waste Management Centre (DSWMC) in October 2011 and entered into the 20-year operations and maintenance phase of the contract. The DSWMC is the first-of-its-kind integrated waste sorting and recycling, waste treatment and green energy generation facility in the Middle East.

The abovementioned handover of the DNSTW solids stream and sludge treatment facilities is not expected to have a material impact on the net tangible assets and earnings per share of Keppel Corporation Limited for the current financial year.
